God at Work:

151 new churches have been organized along with 700 new church type plants. Hundreds of revival campaigns were held resulting in over 15,000 new full and probationary members.

Africa Nazarene University (ANU) was granted the Charter from the Kenya Education Commission. Praise the Lord, we reached our goal of 250, 000 full and associate members. A quarter of a million Nazarenes now reside on the Africa Continent.

This has been a year of both victories and battles. As one person said, you can’t have victories without battles. We can see and testify daily across Africa, “Greater is He that is in us (the Lord Jesus Christ), than he that is in the world.”

Thousands have been fed through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. Thousands have been challenged to “live lives of holiness,” thus avoiding the savages of HIV/AIDS. The Africa Region is growing in both quality and quantity as we are being conformed into the image of Christ.

Australian Youth In Mission teams did evangelism in East Timor and Fiji and returned to their churches with a fire and zeal that is transforming local churches.

One hundred Filipino Nazarenes began a one-year training program to equip and empower them to plant churches where there are no evangelical churches.

Korea’s five districts merged to form the largest Nazarene district in the world with eleven strong zones organized for evangelism and church growth. Six new churches sprang up in six months. Many experienced renewal and impetus to evangelize.

The JESUS Film-Harmon Schmelzenbach reported transformation on Fuji’s Kadavu Island in connection with a former trouble maker who left, saw the JESUS Film, became a new person in Christ, and brought a team back to his village. The chief and people were amazed by his change. That team, along with a Work & Witness team from Puyallup, Washington, met a need of that low-lying area that often floods by building retaining dykes and walkways. The chief gave permission for a large-screen JESUS Film showing. He came to the first Nazarene worship services. Soon he and his wife trusted as their Savoir and donated thirty acres of land for the Church of the Nazarene to put up a building. They are vital members of the congregation. The chief and his wife, along with the JESUS Film team, are planting another Nazarene Church on another part of the large island.

In Papua New Guinea, ninety-seven leaders and missionaries gathered for strategic planning, worship, workshops, and prayer.

Logan Community Church reached out to its multi-ethnic lower economic neighborhood in Australia through rugby. Local police asked to play rugby against the church youth to show that they care about the community and the people of that high-crime area. The youth group won the game, and the community event drew more youth to the church. Many discipleship groups formed and grew as Nazarenes brought their friends. The overfilled church is building and is bursting at the seams!

In Melanesia the lost are hearing the gospel, and the sick are finding healing. The broken hearted are finding comfort, the weak are finding strength. The young are finding hope and direction.

Major evangelistic/holiness campaigns were held on every district within the region. With the radio talk ministry phenomena having reached the Caribbean Region, on various districts, local churches are sponsoring (along with some assistance from World Mission Broadcast) live talk radio programs. Often questions are asked by those calling in that have deep spiritual significance. In some cases, the pastor has prayed with the person live on radio as they accepted Christ as their Savior. In each case, there has been personal follow-up and discipleship in the local church; new Nazarenes have resulted from evangelistic Caribbean talk radio.

CARYCAC, the all region English youth camp, held the first CARYCAC in the northern islands of the region. New enthusiasm and unity resulted. Later this year CONXION, the first all Spanish region camp for youth will be held.

There are areas of the Caribbean where people live in extreme poverty and currently these areas are under extreme political unrest. In the midst of the instability within these countries, we find that God is helping us find new ways to continue the multiplication of church members and the development of out holiness denomination.

A major evangelistic effort on the Southwest German district around the city of Frankfurt has been very successful.

Ongoing evangelism in virtually all sectors of South Asia with growth has revealed these efforts. There has been significant growth in both Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Field Conferences have been held in the Western Mediterranean and Southeastern European regions to equip people for evangelistic efforts and outreach.

Pastor’s conferences in the CIS field resulted in inspiration and growth.

General Superintendent emeritus William Greathouse has been teaching holiness in Russia and the Ukraine. In one session, Dr. Greathouse gave a clear explanation of the theological differences between Calvinism and Wesleyanism. The missionaries noted a lady sobbing during the explanation. As it turns out, this new Nazarene from western Ukraine had never heard any doctrine other than Calvinism and she did not feel she was among the elect. For the first time she realized God’s grace was for her too. She sobbed as she discovered this, was converted, and began to learn about holiness with an entirely new perspective.

The EvangeCube has become a new and exciting tool for evangelism here in the MAC region. In August, a team learned to present the Gospel using this new tool. Approximately 576 people were saved at that time and 4 new cell group missions began. The enthusiasm continues to spread throughout the region as this tool is being used to bring people to Christ.

We had the privilege of hosting the first International Theology Conference in Guatemala, where scholars and theologians from around the world met to discuss the focus and direction of the doctrine of the Church of the Nazarene. The first conference for Ketchi, one of the indigenous groups of Guatemala was held in August with 1500 in attendance, with many seeking the Lord for entire sanctification for the first time.

Mexico held several Holiness Conferences where over three thousand came to seek the Lord in experiences of entire sanctification. The establishment of the first Regional Youth Council occurred in the MAC region this year with representatives from every country meeting together to establish a unified direction for youth ministries across the region. The council adopted the goal of reaching 100,000 young people with the Gospel by 2008.

A lay retreat was held in Costa Rica at which hundreds renewed their commitment to become involved in various ministries both inside and outside of their local churches to reach the lost for Christ.

In September 2002, in Chiclayo, Peru, more than 1,300 youth gathered as part of the IberoAmerica, an evangelistic event that is held in cooperation of the Latin American countries between two regions. Two months prior to the IberoAmerica event there were over 600 Big Brothers consecrated. On the final Sunday service, the emphasis was on missions and the call of God and more than 345 young people came forward to accept the call to some type of ministerial or missions service.

As a result of the JESUS Film, many are coming to know of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to plant 450 new churches this year and develop more discipleship programs.

Another victory was that of the Intensive Missionary Orientation and Training time that we had at the SAM Regional Office in May 2002. These sessions were translated simultaneously into Portuguese, English, and Spanish on video so that we could use the training material for future workshops and missionaries.
